parenting tip: talk to your kids about mental illness. tell them they might have a hard time. tell them they can ask for therapy and medication. tell them they aren’t alone. tell them if your family has a history of mental illnesses and which ones. just fucking talk to your kids and be there for them.

This would push through so many barriers

parenting tip #2: talk to your kids about mental and emotional health. tell them to be thankful for good health. or at least, be thankful that things aren’t worse than they are. tell them life has its challenges, and that everyone has good days and bad days. tell them to chill instead of making important decisions on an impulse during a bad moment. tell them it’s not unusual to have thoughts of killing themselves when depressed- in the U.S. alone, as many people kill themselves in a year as die in auto accidents! remind them: if they are having a good time, to enjoy it fully, because it won’t last, and if they are feeling terrible, to not worry, because it won’t last, either.  tell them they don’t have to hide how they feel from people who can listen.
